(8/22/25) Hydration is essential for every function of the human body.  Water is important for our brain, heart, nerves, muscles, hair, skin, nails, mood, and digestive health.  We perform better at school, work, and sports when we are properly hydrated.  Water needs are individual and vary based on many factors.

Common signs of dehydration include:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Lower back pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry skin
  • Decreased urinary frequency and darker colored urine

Certain factors can impact your hydration status and needs:

  • Changes in kidney function
  • Some medications can impact hydration needs
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Acute illnesses – fever, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Dehydration can impact blood sugar levels, which is especially important for individuals with diabetes

Tips to improve hydration:

  • Use a straw or a fun cup or water bottle to help you drink more, some water bottles have timetable marks to help you remember to drink throughout the day
  • Keep a water bottle or cup out on your desk to help you remember to stay hydrated
  • Drink water and unsweetened beverages throughout the day – herbal and decaffeinated teas count towards your hydration needs
  • Drink water with meals
  • Eat your water – many fruits and vegetables, as well as low sodium broths, are great ways to improve your hydration!

Fun Tip:

Our bodies are approximately 60% water!
