Metro Weekly: Dr. Ruhs Discusses Impacts of COVID-19 on HIV+ Individuals

Dr. Sebastian Ruhs, the director of the Infectious Diseases Center of Excellence at Chase Brexton Health Care in Baltimore, notes that there’s no difference in the risk posed to a healthy LGBTQ person and a healthy heterosexual person — although some LGBTQ people may be at higher risk due to other underlying health conditions or lifestyle choices, such as smoking or vaping, that might compromise their pulmonary health.

LGBT Health Resource Center Joins Open Letter on LGBTQ+ & COVID-19

The LGBT Health Resource Center joined more than 100 other organizations as signatories of a national open letter about coronavirus and the LGBTQ+ communities.

The letter, organized by the National LGBT Cancer Network and GLMA, addresses the LGBTQ+ communities’ increased vulnerability for COVID-19 as a direct result of three factors:

Chase Brexton Employees Raise More Than $25,000 to Support Mission of Healthcare for All

BALTIMORE (January 14, 2020) - Chase Brexton Health Care employees raised more than $25,000 during the organization’s recently completed end-of-year employee giving campaign, which will support their mission to provide welcoming, affordable health care for all.

The final total of $25,709 exceeded the campaign’s goal, with 32 percent of Chase Brexton’s more than 400 employees contributing. The total includes five individual gifts of more than $1,000.

Substance Use Providers Boosted by Federal Loan Repayment Program

Chase Brexton Receives More Than $400,000 in Federal Grants

Chase Brexton Health Care recently received more than $400,000 in federal grants recognizing its national leadership in quality care metrics and expanding its dental care programs.

The funding, made available through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), represents a significant boost to Chase Brexton’s mission to provide welcoming, affordable, quality health care for all.

With the 2019 Baltimore AIDS Walk & Music Festival now halfway to its goal of $150,000, Chase Brexton Health Care is excited to announce the lineup of performers and Community Partners joining us at Power Plant Live! on Sunday, June 9.

Thanks to the hard work of our teams, sponsors, and Community Partners, more than $85,000 has been raised as of early April. Chase Brexton seeks to raise at least $150,000 to fund a newly established HIV medication messenger delivery service.

New Law Allows PrEP Prescription to Minors Without Parental Consent

Maryland lawmakers on March 25 passed legislation supported by testimony from Chase Brexton Health Care providers allowing the prescription of HIV-preventing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to minors without parental permission.

The bill now heads to Governor Larry Hogan to be signed into law.

PrEP is a single daily pill which is overwhelmingly effective in reducing an individual’s risk of contracting HIV if they are exposed to the virus. Chase Brexton has been a leader in Baltimore and Central Maryland in prescribing PrEP.
