(3/20/2023) The founding and growth of Chase Brexton Health Care (CBHC) was driven in large part by women+ activists, volunteers, and staff. Over the past 45 years, the expansion of Chase Brexton was made possible through the work of leaders such as Dr. Paulette Young, Gail Vivino, Dr. Carla Alexander, Karen Bellesky, and Dr. Karen Konkel (Read more about them here). The dedication and brilliance of women+ innovators, are what enabled the creation of our diverse offerings serving women+ patients across Maryland. And our incredible staff (over 80% of which identifies as women+), continue to deliver compassionate, quality care every day.

This Women’s History Month, we want to celebrate our women+ community for all that you do and all that you are. Simultaneously, we recognize the unique challenges we are currently facing in today’s world and hold space for your stress and grief. We know that misogyny is deeply rooted in our culture and social interactions. It lives in the idea that empathy and kindness equate to weakness. It lives in our assumptions and expectations both for ourselves and for others.

Collectively, we live in a society that villainizes anything “different”. Differences in race, health, body type, neurodivergences, gender identity, gender expression, sex, sexuality, age, interests, trauma, education, family structures, and more. We are all made up of a combination of these things, with varying levels of power, privilege, and shame attached to each.

As we continue to be hit with wave after wave of new legislation and rulings designed to hurt us, erase us, take away our right to choose, our right to exist… at the Institute for EDI, we offer ourselves in solidarity. We affirm your existence. We believe in you. We see you.
