(7/26/24) Few health care providers receive professional training on the unique care needs of the LGBTQ community, either during their education or once they’ve begun their careers. Even in 2024, locating and accessing effective training on LGBTQ health can be difficult and time-consuming—especially in a political climate that threatens to reduce access to this life-saving information.
To meet this need, the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity is offering a special one-day virtual learning experience, “Providing Affirming Care for Sexual and Gender Minority (LGBTQ) Communities.” This accredited symposium will provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to promote the well-being of their sexual and gender minority patients.
“We regularly hear from healthcare providers who are eager to care for their LGBTQ patients, but simply never received the training to do so effectively,” said Sam McClure, Executive Director of The Center for LGBTQ Health Equity. “This one-day immersive learning experience allows attendees to get the information they need to care for sexual and gender minority individuals and begin making a life-saving difference in those communities.”
With sessions ranging from beginner-level education to more advanced topics, participants can craft a series of training sessions that meets their needs, whether they’re a seasoned provider or a new healthcare professional unfamiliar with caring for the LGBTQ community. The symposium offers up to six hours of continuing education credits; a behavioral health track and a medical track are available, but all courses are cross-accredited, allowing attendees to build a day of education that’s right for them.
Session instructors include some of the world’s most renowned subject matter experts who primarily serve these populations in their practice. Among them is the symposium’s keynote speaker, Dr. Kade Goepferd, the Chief Education Officer and the past Chief of Staff for Children’s Minnesota, as well as the Medical Director of Children’s Minnesota’s Gender Health Program and a pediatrician in the Children’s Minneapolis Primary Care clinic. Dr. Goepferd is a leader in the LGBT community in driving equitable care for LGBTQ youth, particularly transgender and gender diverse youth, and is a sought-after speaker and trainer on these topics.
Other instructors include Randall Leonard of ENBY Consulting LLC, and Kate Bishop MSSA, Deborah Dunn PA-C, Dr. James Griffin, and Dr. Elyse Pine of Chase Brexton Health Care.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Goepferd to our symposium, and to be inspired alongside our attendees by their tireless advocacy for their patients,” McClure said. “But we’re also eager for participants to hear from our entire roster of instructors, who have years of experience and vital insights to share.”
Partnership opportunities are available, with healthcare organizations encouraged to pre-purchase a block of registrations for their providers and ensure that their patients receive welcoming, affirming care throughout their experience.
